The 'Stupid', it Burns!

So, anyone out there following government nutritional guidelines would appear to have been eating 400 less calories than appropriate!
  • The recommended daily intake of calories could be increased by up to 16%, a draft report by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition said.

It just drives me crazy that anyone would realistically think you can simply 'choose' to stop short or over shoot your body's daily requirement of calories without some kind of compensatory factor kicking in.

The numbskullery these supposed experts exhibit can scarcely be believed. Increasingly, the dialogue between them and the no less ignorant journalists takes place in elephantine company. In fact the room is now crammed to the rafters with pachyderms. If only for the sake of these ill-housed beasts I hope the penny drops.

Yeah - if the stats had come out the other way around and they were telling us to CUT 400 calories a day, the media would be saying "ah yes, this explains the obesity problem".

I don't really understand why they are changing this figure but they seem to be trying to make sense of conflicting data and are unable to square the circle. Still, I am not sure who really counts calories apart from the ignorant, gullible and paranoid.

They say we can eat more if we exercise more - but "duh!" - of course we should. Exercise makes us hungry - as does eating less. Failure to respond to hunger makes us lethargic. Shimples.

BTW 400 calories can be burned off by a 190lb man running for about 30 mins at an 8 minute mile pace (or 7.5mph). In addition, 400 calories is just over one Mars Bar.
